Be prepared for a disaster is the easiest way to improve their chances of survival. Emergency plans will also help reduce fear, anxiety and losses associated with disasters. An important element of any emergency survival kit disaster is a first aid kit.

A kit of emergency first aid should contain a variety of basic supplies that allow to handle most typical, non-fatal injuries. You can buy a pre-assembled first aid kit, or create your own. In any case, your first aid kit should contain at least the following elements.

• Adhesive bandages in different sizes
• 5 “x 9″ sterile dressing
• 3 “square sterile gauze
• 4 “sterile gauze pads
• Roller gauze bandage
• Triangular bandages
• A roll 3 “cohesive bandage
• 2 “wide adhesive tape

Antibacterial elements:

• Germicidal hand wipes or alcohol-based hand sanitizer
• Antiseptic wipes
• Antibiotic ointment
• Pairs of medical grade without latex gloves

Miscellaneous:

• Tongue depressor blades (can be used as finger splints)
• Cold compresses
• Scissors (small, personal)
• Cotton balls
• Tweezers
• Safety pins, of different sizes
• Thermometer
• Tube or jar of Vaseline
• Sunscreen
• CPR breathing barrier (mask)
• In reference first aid manual

This basic list should be customized based on where you live (hot or cold climates) and type most probable emergency disaster you expect to find (Do you live in a flood plain, hurricane or a tornado region, area the earthquake, or an area prone to wildfires, to name a few. Also, if you or members of your family has special medical needs (such as prescription drugs), these too must be included in your emergency first aid kit.
