survival question: how do you make a knife, if you are stranded in the jungle, or an island?

I am writing a survival book and had just started planning the “hunting” chapter, and then thought, what if you need to hunt, or make things when you are stranded, but dont have a knife? what (from the forest, jungle, island, etc.) would you make it from and how? if any one has a step vy step guide that would be great.

In the absence of metal rock usually has the best knife like qualities. Selecting the proper rock for this purpose is difficult. What you are looking for is rocks that are made from silica (glass). When broken rocks made up of silica leave sharp edges like shards of glass. The goal is to select an irregular shaped rock to break (e.g. longer flatter rocks are easier to break, so the more a rock deviates from a sphere the easier it will be to break) that is not to large, ideal would be double fist sized and smaller. Use a hard surface like another rock as your base and finally a third rock to do your smashing. Once broken chose a shard with the best potential “knife” shape and then again use other rocks this time just to chip at it for better shape. I recommend sticking with a bare stone handle to begin with. If that is not possible due to sharp edges, the bark of many small shrubs can be stripped in strips and used as a basic rope to wrap around the handle to avoid cuts. Remember to avoid injury. In the absence of medical care (eg antibiotics) it is important to avoid cuts and scrapes as much as possible.

You never know what you’ll run into o a backpacking trip; rain, snow, lightning, rockslides, dehydration, altitude sickness, and the aches and pains associated with hauling a 40-60 pound backpack along mountainous trails. Trekking into the wilderness should not be taken lightly because there are real dangers, but these can be mitigated with the following ten backpacking trip essentials. 1. Knowledge – Knowledge is power. Learn how to read a map and compass; make a fire in the rain or snow, with and without matches. Learn basic first aid. Take a survival course. The point is the more you know before you ever step foot on the trail the better your chances of dealing with any emergency situation that occurs. 2. Map/Compass – Getting lost is not an option. Learn to use a compass and read a map in tandem. These two items can get you out of unfamiliar territory. 3. Lighter, matches, and a fire starter – Water proof matches and a lighter can come in handy but what happens if these don’t work. There are many sparking fire starters available at any number of outdoor stores. Get one, learn how to use it, and keep it in a safe place in your pack. 4. First aid kit – Get one from your local outdoor store that is specific for backpackers. Make sure it contains pain relievers, bandages, anti-biotic ointment, anti-septic spray or ointment and some form of allergy medicine. An Epi-pen can also be a good investment because an allergic reaction to a bug bite 20 miles in the wilderness can be deadly. 5. Foot care – Blisters can quickly bring any backpacking trip to a painful halt if you don’t have the necessary treatment options. Moleskin and a needle should both be included in your first aid kit to care for any blisters. 6. Water – Dehydration is not something you want to experience. Make sure your filter is in working order before you hit the trailhead. Even then it may break or quit working so have iodine tablets as a backup because while dehydration is not fun neither is giardia. 7. Rain gear – No matter where you are going always carry reliable rain gear. Hypothermia sets in fast if you get wet and is one of the biggest causes of wilderness deaths. 8. Shelter – Whether you use a tent, tarp, or bivy sack you need a way to get out of the elements. Learn how to use which ever shelter you do use so that you can set it up quickly. 9. Sleeping bag – Where you are going and what time of year will help determine what kind of bag you need. Down sleeping bags are the warmest for what they weigh but lose their insulating ability if they get wet. For camping in wet nasty conditions it may be best to have a synthetic bag. 10. Tailor your gear for where and when you are going – Quite simply this means take stock of where you are going, how long you will be gone, and the weather conditions you are likely to experience and customize your gear list to that. Planning ahead will keep surprises on the trail to a minimum. You don’t want to be 10 miles down the trail and find out you forgot something that you will really need.

We all need to be aware of the predicament we face when a disaster strikes. It really does not matter where you live; you have issues beyond your control that can place you and your family in harm’s way. For example if you live in Los Angeles you need to be ready for earthquakes, in Oklahoma, tornadoes, in Florida, Hurricanes, in Washington, Mt. St. Helen’s, in Iowa, floods. Each part of the country has their issue. It may be as simple as a massive power outage, do not forget terror threats, pandemics, etc. You need to consider what you might in store for and prepare accordingly. What kind of survival gear do you need? 72 hours kits, Office Kits, School Lockdown Kits?

Having said enough about the scary stuff, we should concentrate on making sure we know what we should have to properly prepare Emergency kits for events in our lives putting us and our loved ones in danger.

This is a short list of items you should consider for survival. By all means, be creative and add to the list as you see fit. Survival Gear should be personal.

- Water storage and carrying containers. Don’t forget personal sized bottles

- Water filters and/or filters for purification

- Fires Starters, (waterproof matches, lighters, flint and steel, etc.)

- Pots and utensils for cooking and boiling water

- Eating utensils and plates suitable for preparing food

- Salt, pepper and basic spices

- Canned Food, Freeze dried or dehydrated food that can be easily stored and transported

- MRE’s are excellent

- Light sources, including flashlights and candles to be able to cook and see at night

- Rain gear and warm outerwear

- Tools such as knives, axes, hatchets and a good shovel

- Sleeping bags and foam mats

- Tents, tarps and rope

- Sanitation and cleaning supplies, including dish detergent and hand cleansers

- Personal hygiene products, from toothbrushes to toilet paper

- Several changes of clothing for each person

- Comfortable and durable shoes and several pairs of socks

- Books on wilderness survival, primitive living, and gathering wild foods

- Walkie-talkie radios with solar chargers.

- A radio and batteries; solar power or crank radio is preferred

- Fishing gear

- Rifle or Handgun and Ammunition

- Traps and snares

- Boy Scout Handbook (for great easy tips on using the snares and traps)

- First aid kit
